Lunch box planner (free printable)
Three pages: a week's lunch box menu, the packing staples checklist, and a sheet of cut-out lunch box jokes. Ideas for kids and grown-up lunch boxes included, plus the food-safety guidelines that keep both edible. Print free — no signup.
The 7am lunch box is where meal plans go to die: nobody decides at 7am. Decide on Sunday instead — this template does it in one page. Page 1 is the week's menu: five days, four slots each, written by whoever packs. Page 2 is the staples checklist that tells you in one glance what to restock. Page 3 is the one that gets kids actually eating: cut-out jokes to tuck under the sandwich. Post the filled menu on the fridge and packing becomes 90 seconds of assembly instead of five minutes of staring.
Page 1 — the weekly lunch box menu
Fill the main first (usually dinner leftovers — cook once, pack twice), then add one fruit or veg, one snack, one drink. If a column stays blank all week, that's your shopping list talking, not your kid.
| Day | Main | Fruit / veg | Snack | Drink |
| Monday | | | | |
| Tuesday | | | | |
| Wednesday | | | | |
| Thursday | | | | |

This week's rule that makes it work: ☐ no repeats ☐ kid picks Friday ☐ whatever's fastest ☐ other: ________
Page 2 — the packing checklist (staples to restock)
Tape this inside the pantry door and tick what's on hand Sunday night — the unticked rows are Monday's shopping list. Pair it with the weekly grocery list so the lunch box never runs out mid-week.
| Staple | On hand |
| Carbs: wraps, pita, crackers, pasta | ☐ |
| Protein: deli meat, hard eggs, hummus, cheese | ☐ |
| Produce: whatever survived the week — berries, grapes, carrot sticks | ☐ |
| Fun extras: one treat, written down so it doesn't vanish on Monday | ☐ |
| Cold chain: ice pack + insulated bag (see guidelines below) | ☐ |
| Dips/sauces in small containers | ☐ |
| Water bottle (frozen half-full the night before) | ☐ |
| Napkin + fork + the note | ☐ |
Lunch box ideas, by eater
- For kids (the rotation trick): kids don't want variety, they want recognition — pick three mains they always finish (wraps, pasta salad, DIY cracker stackers) and rotate fruit and snacks around them. A lunch that comes home uneaten teaches you more than any list: whatever returned twice this month is off the menu.
- For adults (lunch box for men / women = the same math): a satisfying packed lunch is protein-forward and not sad — leftovers repacked into a wide-mouth container, grain bowls that microwave, jar salads dressed at the bottom, or the bento-style layout: half produce, quarter protein, quarter crackers or rice. The "for men/for women" searches are the same lunch in different portion sizes.
- Bento vs. regular, honestly: bento boxes win on presentation and portion separation and lose on parts (lids, dividers, gaskets to wash). A plain box + the menu page does the same job; buy the bento when a picky eater refuses foods that touch.
- The one-ice-pack reality: an ice pack against the drink keeps the whole box cold; two is better from May to September. Freeze the water bottle half-full the night before — it's the drink and the cold pack in one.
Lunch box food safety guidelines
Four rules cover it: keep cold food at or below 40°F (ice pack + insulated bag does this), keep hot food in an insulated jar pre-heated with boiling water for 5 minutes first, and get any perishable leftovers back to the fridge within two hours of lunch. Anything with mayo, meat, dairy or cut fruit rides with the ice pack — shelf-stable snacks (crackers, whole fruit, granola) are the only things that survive a hot car.
Page 3 — lunch box jokes (cut them out)
The highest return-per-word item in a lunch box. Cut along the dotted lines, write the child's name on the back, and drop one in — a third-grader who finds a joke at lunch tells the whole table.

Lunch box FAQ
What are good lunch box ideas for kids?
Three mains kids reliably finish — wraps, pasta salad, cracker stackers — rotated with different fruits and snacks, plus one treat and one joke note. The rotation matters more than novelty: recognized food gets eaten, experimental food comes home.
What should adults pack in a lunch box?
Protein-forward, no-sad-sandwich options: dinner leftovers in a wide-mouth container, grain bowls, jar salads with dressing at the bottom, or a bento split of half produce, quarter protein, quarter carbs. Portion size, not content, is the only real difference between "lunch box for men" and "for women" searches.
Is there a free printable lunch box template?
Yes — a weekly menu grid (main/fruit/snack/drink for five days), a staples checklist to restock from, and a sheet of cut-out jokes, all free to print with no signup. Print to PDF if you want a reusable copy.
How do I keep a lunch box cold and safe?
Ice pack plus insulated bag for anything with meat, dairy, mayo or cut fruit; freeze the water bottle half-full the night before as a second cold source; pre-heat insulated jars with boiling water for hot food; and refrigerate perishable leftovers within two hours of lunch.
How do I plan school lunches for the week?
Fill the menu page on Sunday — main first (usually last night's dinner), then fruit, snack, drink — shop the unticked staples, and post the finished menu on the fridge. Morning packing becomes 90 seconds of assembly instead of a decision at 7am.
